Monarch Crunch was aimed to develop a brand and packaging that took elements of ODU, ODU Sports, the ODU BBQ sauce and Beer, and the local Norfolk community.
Design Process & Early Designs
The design took many variations with different styles of photos, colors, and alignments before the final cover came together. Choosing a new direction with the front cover took some time, especially with the new player subject. But after combing through 20-30 photos of different players and positions, I landed on the #1 with his arms wide open.
I also had to play around with the style of the cereal and the tilt-blur. It also took some time to land on the two typefaces but after some alterations, I landed on the two listed down below.

Early Design Process
Final Results
The #1 player opening his arms was chosen over the #3 player because not only did it fill up the space more, but it allowed to bring more space for a "cereal explosion" and more details behind and around him. The side art tab was chosen to have the 2024 ODU Monarchs Football schedule to show support of the football team and who they will play.
Player-Centric Cover and Details
The front cover brings a mix of a football field in the background, an explosion of cereal in the back and two different typefaces (Microgramma on top and Jersey M54 on bottom).
The subject chosen is a player from the re-debut of the "Hudson Blue" ODU Jerseys in 2021. The picture behind "Monarch Crunch" is of S.B. Ballard Stadium, the home of the ODU Monarchs.
Branded Word Search
The back cover brings two aspects to the cover:
a word search and a photo collage of ODU Football past, present and future including former QB Taylor Heinicke (#14), current LB Jason Henderson (#42), current Head Coach Ricky Rahne, football entrances, celebrations, interceptions and more moments captured with an ODU Crown on top
like a sticker.
